Flyers captain Claude Giroux is close to agreeing to an eight-year contract extension worth “north of” $8 million per year, according to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun.
Giroux, 25, has one year left on his current deal, which comes with a cap hit of $3.75 million.
Under the new CBA, comparable contracts for star forwards would belong to Anaheim’s duo of Ryan Getzlaf (8 years, $66 million, AAV $8.25 million) and Corey Perry (8 years, $69 million, AAV $8.625 million), as well as Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin (8 years, $76 million, AAV $9.5 million)
Sources tell TSN’s Darren Dreger that Giroux’s cap hit should fall around $8.3 million and that the deal could be announced in a day or two.
It’s worth noting that the Flyers have two significant contracts that expire after the 2013-14 season. One belongs to 38-year-old defenseman Kimmo Timonen ($6 million); the other to 27-year-old defenseman Andrej Meszaros ($4 million).
It’s also been speculated Philadelphia could trade blue-liner Braydon Coburn, who has three years remaining on his deal, with a cap hit of $4.5 million.
Love this deal. The money is what it is, he's going to get it from someone & you're not replacing him with anyone as good.
Problem with Datsyuk is that he's 34 & Giroux's numbers are 25 are nearly identical to him. Giroux has the potential to be as good as Datsyuk.
Stamkos is pretty much strictly an offensive player. I'd still trade Giroux for him but he doesn't do much on the defensive side of the puck.
Toews is better than G
No on Sedin....another defensive liability.
The real point of asking the question is not to point out the scarcity of players like Giroux, but to also show that even the ones that are as good or better aren't coming here.
The Flyers aren't acquiring Toews, Datsyuk, Stamkos or Malkin.....you couldn't get them if you wanted, so you pay the guy that's in their elite status, even though he doesn't quite have their pedigree yet.
you can also make a case that the reason why Malkin and Toews are even brought up in this conversation is that Malkin has supporting him and Toews has a better supporting cast around him. I think Vinny will help take some of that pressure off Claude and many teams won't be able to just focus on shutting the G line down now.
