According to Crossing Broad, Bryz will be here next season:
See, I don’t know how to take this. Howard Eskin has had a terrible 2013 when it comes to original reports. Really, he hasn’t been right about anything. But here he’s giving you the source– tenured Flyers exec Peter Luukko with two U’s and two K’s, got it. There’s a real possibility that Eskin is just taking Luukko’s positive avoidance of the answer and running with it, and there’s also the possibility that Luukko is lying or doesn’t know yet and doesn’t feel like creating more controversey around the goofy goalie. But if the Flyers have already decided to keep Bryz and not amnesty (buy him out)– why? He’s not good. Save for a two-week stretch last March, Bryz has, at no time, played up to his contract. He’s an average goalie being paid wayyyy above average money. It’s gotten to the point where – and perhaps this isn’t entirely his fault – everything he says stirs some sort of controversy and serves as a distraction for the entire organization. What’s worse is that the league’s salary cap next season is going down to $64.3 million. Bryz’s cap hit is $5.6 million, which, after Danny Briere is gone, will be the second-highest on the team behind Old Man Timonen, who, for some unexplainable reason, was signed to a one-year, $6 million extension last year.
Once Pronger and Briere come off the books (LTIR, trade or amnesty), the Flyers, who currently have the highest cap payroll by a wide margin, will be around $59 million, $5 million under the cap, with plenty of holes to fill. It makes no sense to keep around an average, overpaid goofball who, at this point, is nothing but a distraction.

Even if the Flyers weren't up against it on the salary cap, it doesn't make any sense to continuously pay an avg goaltender, elite money. He is never going to live up to that contract. Homer, you made a mistake, we get it, mistakes happen. That's ok. Compounding the mistake to the detriment of the team by constantly peddling him out there in the hopes that he'll improve while he cost your team wins is not ok. He is getting benched in Russia, come on Homer. Russia is about 5 steps down from the NHL. If he can't hack it there, what makes you think he'll hack it here Homer? Unless Mason really does a complete 180, does anyone honestly see him beating out Mason for the starting job next year legitimately? Does Homer really want a backup goalie that will cost this team 5.6 mil on the cap? Not only is Bryz not living up to his contract, but he's become the butt of the media and opposing fans jokes. Does Homer not see what everyone else does? Homer and Snider screwed up big time by trading Bob and signing this fraud to a massive contract, stop compounding the problem further. If Homer doesn't amnesty Bryz, it is just further evidence that he has no concept of how to operate a salary cap and is too stubborn to admit a sunk cost and move on. It's bad enough that he has the salary cap tied up with mostly old vets that have seen better days, why subject the fans to more of this nonsense from this ass clown?

Well, we know Homer is not afraid to admit contract mistakes "Richards & Carter" If he doesn't amnesty Bryz, the notion is to lets see how Mason and Bryz compete against each other and if Bryz shits the bed this season, then he will definitely be gone next year since they have that option to amnesty him next year and it won't cost them as much to buy him out.

Richards and Carter were traded, not amnestied. They were traded for some very good pieces. Huge difference. We can debate all day long about whether or not they underachieved here, but at no point was Richards and Carters play per their contracts so poor that there was even any discussion of amnestying them. Not a fan of Richards and Carter, but they did lead this team to a finals appearance and won a cup. Bryz has been anywhere from mediocre to pure crap. It's debatable about whether or not you could build around Richards and Carter, no debate with Bryz. He's getting paid elite money. He's also in his 30's. Richards and Carter were in their 20's. If Bryz was living up to his contract, there wouldn't be any discussion about whether or not Mason could take his job. Just the fact that it's even a possibility means to me that Bryz needs to go. It's not like we are talking about two young goalies making 2 mil each. We are talking about an massively overpaid medicore 30 something vs a slightly overpaid young 20 something with potential. Amnesty this fool and I'll take my chances with the latter (knowing that Mason may not be the answer either, but for the money, it's worth it). Bryz's cap hit could be used on a real difference maker on D. His cap hit and Briere's could be used to shore up our atrocious blue line.

I am not disagreeing with you here. I would like to see Bryz gone as well, but from a business standpoint, they won't have to pay him as much money to buy him out after next season as they would now which is probably why they will ride him out another year.

I agree Mag. I bet they keep him, just from the business standpoint of it.

I don't know if it's a complete no brainer yet. Lundqvist will be 32 by then. Not accent by any means, but close to getting into past his prime territory. How long of a contract do you give him? I really don't want to pay him until he's 40. Plus if Mason looks promising, we are going to give up on another young goaltender for an established old hat? Haven't we just recently been down that road when we all thought Bryz was the real deal and we traded Bob because we thought he was of no use anyway? I understand King Henrick right now is as good as it gets, but this team is cursed when it comes to goaltending. Plus I'd find it hard to believe NY would just let him go.

Bob McKenzie:
@tsnbobmckenzie 31s It's not carved in stone, but in spite of what has been said in past, I expect PHI is likely to use compliance buyout on Ilya Bryzgalov.
and
TSNBobMcKenzie: Also, PHI is in market for D and may be willing to move one of their young centres - B Schenn or Couturier - for the right deal.
