There is a new beat writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Mike Sielski. This is the guy that asked Berube if he was going to discipline Rosehill, in which Berube told him to get lost. I believe he is also the same guy that fired up Snider about getting a fresh perspective and changing the culture in which Snider went into a tirade about how they don't need to change their culture.
What is the thoughts of everyone? Personally, I think their biggest problem is patience. I believe they would do all they can to win. It is a little harder with the cap and Holmgren has had a very up and down GM reign so far. He has made some good moves, made some head scratching contract signings. Maybe Ron Hextall is the fresh perspective because he has been away from the team for a while. When you look at the coaches, a lot of the coaches hired haven't come from within the organization. Keenan, Simpson (bad I know), Neilson, Hitchcock (brief stint as an assistant), Lavi, Ramsey, Dineen, Pat Quinn, and even Shero to name some.

Keenan, Simpson (bad I know), Neilson, Hitchcock (brief stint as an assistant), Lavi, Ramsey, Dineen, Pat Quinn, and even Shero to name some. I agree with you. I believe Snider when he says he wants to win and is doing all he can. Then again what organization doesn't want to win? Nobody is ever going to say the opposite, lets be real. Even if their intention was to lose to get a #1 overall pick, nobody is going to come out and say it. I defintely think they need to change their approach on how they go about trying to achieve their objective. I think they need to have more patience with the younger guys they bring in and not be so quick to run them out of town. I think they need to do a better job of backing their coaches when it comes to how the coaches coach the team. Far too often they allow players to run coaches out of town and that's not cool. You can't allow the players to have that kind of control. Again more patience is needed their. They need to bring in players that fit the coaches system. Heck they need players that will buy in to what the coach wants to and tries to do. I would really like to see Hextall replace Holmgren. We've had tons of player turnover, several HC changes and the one constant has been him. I think his mind is still stuck on the old NHL and I think Hextall gets the new NHL. Look at what he helped create in LA. I want to see that happen here. He did good things there and I would think he has a clue on how to manage a cap and construct a team that is more geared toward skill and speed, not just size and vet leadership. I doubt Hextall would go crazy on the type of contracts Holmgren dishes out. I doubt they would have hired him if they didn't intend on replacing Holmgren. It remains to be seen if Berube is the answer at HC or not. I wouldn't be surprised if Snider cleans house this offseason, Hexy takes over and we have a new HC in place. Berube's comment about discipline was stupid. What am I going to do spank him? You do have the power to bench and even suspend a player for conduct detrimental to the team. You do have venues to discipline. You can't tolerate lack of dsicpline on the ice. It has to go for everyone, not just a select few players. I'm willing to give the man a chance, but come on with that nonsense.

This is an interesting topic which I will revisit when I have more time.

I always laugh when people point to Pittsburgh & Chicago as the way to build teams. Those teams sucked for way more years than they should have at the expense of their fanbases.....the Blackhawks were being outdrawn at the gate by an AHL team & old man Wirtz didn't care....the Pens sold any talent they had off for a little more than a bunch of role players & nearly moved twice.
Bottom line is, that shit just doesn't fly here in Philadelphia. The biggest issue is that the old man & Luukko have too much input on player personnel. With the resources at their disposal (rabid fanbase willing to spend money, good ownership with money to spend) they should have hired a GM that had free reign to do as he pleased in regards to team building.
But we get the old man on TV in 2011 saying that the goaltending we saw "will never happen again".......& next thing you know Bryz is here with a crazy price tag attached. That's more on Snider than Holmgren. Trading Bob? Because of Bryz.
Holmgren makes the moves but he's doing as directed by Snider. That's why I shrug when I hear that Hextall needs to take over. What's the difference? It's the same moves just a different GM giving the press conference. You don't see the Kings' owner out there making a spectacle of himself. The only reason we know about the Hawks owner is because everyone hated his old man.
Snider needs to back away & stop playing fantasy hockey. Until that happens, it'll be more of the same with an ECF run every 3-4 years & the occasional berth in the SCF....maybe we'll get lucky one of those times.

I agree with what both D-Man and Tags have said. With regards to the coach, I agree, they do need to back their coaches to a degree. I was really pissed when they fired Hitchcock. The guy won everywhere he went. Then I had to see Mike Richards who was practically a rookie at the time complaining about Hitch's style of coaching. To me, that was BS. With regards to Lavi, the system he coaches has proven successful when you have the right players. I don't think he had all the right pieces to win with his style. Losing Pronger and Carle hurt him. Tags is right with the Old Man. He pushed to get Bryz signed which essentially led us to get rid of Bob. While I fault Holmgren as well, when the boss tells you to do something, what choice do you have. Lavi gave up on Bob too quick as well, but he experienced a rookie in Cam Ward who won a cup. I guess he felt Bob wouldn't handle the pressure here. Think about it, Bob wins a Vezina in Columbus. That's not exactly a hockey hot bed, but it is what it is. I hope what they have done defensively with young players works out in their favor with Haag, Morin, Alt, and Gostisbehere, along with Stolarz as a goalie. That remains to be seen.

The reason I think Hextall would make a difference is because unlike Homer, Hextall has a track record of building a contender that can be sustained for the long haul. You don't see LA's roster littered with a crap ton of bad contracts. They have young star players that can score, play D. They have a young elite goaltender. They have players who fit the system. Maybe your right and I'm just fooling myself. Maybe the old man will keep Hextall from doing his job. Maybe he kept Homer from doing his. I don't think Homer is completely blameless here. I agree with you wholeheartedly about Snider. New personnel always bring hope, even if it's a fools hope.

To be fair, a lot of those players were there before Lombardi took over and brought hextall with him. Although he did draft Doughty.
