I know that the preseason is hard to get a feel for how the team will do, but my concern is the last game against the Devils where we had just about a full squad and got beat 4-1.
I think they can certainly make the playoffs as long as they stay healthy, but if they get off to rough start, my guess us Lavi gets canned, Berube gets name interim head coach and Tocchet comes on as an assistant.
If they start like shit....like 2-8-2....I have no problems with Lavi getting axed. But I want nothing to do with Terry Murray.
we have a lot of players that need to take the next step into becoming the players they were projected to be when they were drafted....Couturier, both Schenns, Gus (if he makes the team), Mason, Laughton.
We have a decent amount of vets that still need to be very good producers as well.....Streit, Kimmo, Vinny, Emery, Hartnell
And a few guys that need to stay healthy for a change...Mez, Grossmann, Coburn
Basically if they can hit on 10 or 11 of the 14 players I listed & the rest of the team does what they're expected to do (G, Jake, Smmer, Read) they'll be decent.
I'm still not convinced Lavi is the right coach. Murray may not be either but I think this roster would certainly buy into his system more than what we have right now. to me Brayden Schenn needs to step it up to the next level. he's struggled as a winger before and either the kid adjusts or he will flounder and be dealt early on as a shake up deal when this team struggles.
I expect or D to be very soft in front of the net, I expect Mez to continue to be a china doll, they will rely too much on special teams and struggle 5 on 5. if we get average goaltending it will be a step up from what we had last season. I think they will borderline as a 7th. to 8th. seed but who's to say? this is yur typical Flyer team we've seen over the last 15 yrs., too good to go through a rebuild mode, not good enough to be a serious threat or contender, I'm going in with a bit of low expectations, so anything above .500 will make me happy
